Feasibility Studies
Calculated the return on investment of an imaging and document management system for a
large middle eastern refinery. Utilized vendor data, data from other refinery projects,
and the Adler Groups proprietary data for imaging systems. Documented many costs and
benefits often overlooked, but always encountered for such systems. The success of this
work led to an assignment to develop detailed system specifications for the system.
Performed document management feasibility study for
L.A. County's largest Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). Interviewed workers from all
relevant functional areas. Inventoried inbound and outbound documents. Recommended
implementation of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) for major providers and insurers as
first priority. Also prevented the company from purchasing microfilming hardware which had
already been approved based on misleading vendor claims.
Reviewed selected overhead operations for one of the
worlds largest food processors. Discovered that leveraging currently installed workflow
software to another application could save company over $1,000,000 per year net in outside
vendor costs. Documented findings and developed management proposal. Working with
integrator on system implementation.

System Specifications and Selection
- Developed Functional Specification Document for the multipurpose Document Management
System to handle all critical documentation for a large refinery. Interviewed
knowledge-workers from twenty-seven functional areas. System requirements included image
management, forms management, workflow, and hyper-linking of information. The final
specification document also defined system performance levels, documentation standards,
testing requirements, and training responsibilities.
- Selected a standard Engineering Document Management
System for the worlds largest oil producer. Worked in conjunction with the Corporate
MIS department and users from multiple divisions and organizations to come to consensus on
scoring criteria and methodology. This included over four hundred tests of the
systems functionality, adherence to standards, and performance. Developed
spreadsheet to score these tests. Developed shortlist based on "must" criteria.
Managed product testing. Managed evaluation of the short list of vendors to select
standard system. Documented protocol to update selection.
- Developed an improved automated workflow to manage
engineering drawings for one of Californias largest electricity suppliers.
- Wrote the Engineering Document Management System
Business Requirements for a large public utility company. Produced a document management
metadata glossary to ensure consistency between multiple document management projects.
- Developed portions of a Lump Sum Bid Package for a
large Refinery Management System, including document management sections. Managed
production of all functional specifications.
- Developed Request for Proposal (RFP) for
implementation of seven imaging and document management applications for a domestic oil
products marketing firm. Due to clients time constraints, the RFP needed to be
completed and issued three weeks after the first technical interview. Developed a quality
RFP which was issued on schedule. Continued to manage the implementation of the
applications (see below).
- Performed Data Flow Analysis for portions of an
integrated management information system. Acted as a primary resource for other analysts
on the data flow analysis and documentation tool. Responsible for normalizing all data
flow diagrams as well as editing and correcting data flow diagrams done by all other
analysts for the final proposal.
- Managed a set of corporate wide Joint Application
Development Sessions for a multi-national Engineering and Construction Company. These JAD
Sessions resulted in the specifications for a new corporate wide accounting system.
Managed the development of a corporate financial glossary which greatly facilitated mutual
understanding between divisions.
- Taught Data Flow Analysis as part of a U.C.L.A.
Extension course on successfully managing software development.

Project Management
- Project Manager for the implementation of a pilot Engineering Document Management System
for a large middle east oil company. Developed a detailed Test Plan before the contract
was put in place, to ensure vendor compliance. Created a project notebook, with copies for
all major parties. This notebook was key to ensuring a common and up-to-date understanding
of project scope and schedule. Set up weekly project review meetings with project
sponsors, users, and vendors. Wrote final report, which client chose to use as a model for
all other system projects.
- Complete management responsibilities for
implementation of seven imaging and document management applications for one of
Americas largest oil products marketing firms. Protected clients interests in
areas of budget, schedule, and scope. Ensured that variances between requirements and
selected packages were identified and managed. Worked extensively with systems integrator,
clients procurement department, scanning service bureau, and clients computer
support staff to keep project on schedule and budget. One of the applications has since
been nominated for awards. These applications have also been the subject of multiple
presentations by various client and vendor representatives.
- Managed and expedited a very complex image conversion
project. Worked with companies legal departments to formulate the contract for the
conversion. Worked with clients computer professionals to ensure hardware, software,
and appropriate conversion environment. Provided solutions to multiple daily challenges.
- Managed the scanning and production of CDs for the
extensive documentation connected with the sale of a companys assets. This project
had a very tight schedule. Documentation spanned over 25 CDs and over one hundred
copies were required in some cases. The project, as implemented, saved the client over
$300,000 when compared to the estimated cost of providing the bidders with paper copies.
